Prepared for Nick Schmalz and team

Five businesses, one family name.
Here is where Google sends your customers today.

Schmalz Custom Landscaping and Garden Center, Schmalz Waterford, LawnGuard, The Pool Team and Sprangers Orchard. What we found, what it is costing you, and a plan to fix it before spring.

Searches run October 29, 2026, during business hours. All dollar figures are estimates, not promises.

Before we show you anything

A few questions, so the plan fits where you are taking the business

The five businesses

  • Over the next few years, which ones do you want to grow, hold steady, or step back from?
  • Any plans to sell off or hand off any part of it?
  • Is Schmalz Acres and the Adventure Zone part of this picture?

Appleton: landscaping or garden center?

  • If you could only push one harder next spring, which would it be?
  • Which brings in more profit for the time it takes?
  • Who are your best landscaping customers, and what job do you want more of?

How it is run today

  • Are all five under the same management and the same marketing person?
  • One budget or separate ones?
  • Who has the logins for each Google listing and website, and who approves changes?

Capacity and leads

  • Which businesses could take more work next season, and which are booked out?
  • Where do new customers come from today, and how do you track it?
  • Which towns do you want more work in, and where do you not want to drive?

Waterford and LawnGuard

  • Does Waterford run as its own team and office?
  • Does LawnGuard serve southeastern Wisconsin from Waterford today?

What you have tried

  • Google shows you ran ads before. What worked and what did not?
  • Who else should be part of this decision, and when would you want to start?

The big one

One Google listing is doing two jobs, and doing both halfway

Your main listing is set to Garden center first, with 8 more categories behind it (landscaper, landscape designer, lawn care, pools and more). Google ranks a listing mostly on its first category, so the landscaping side gets the leftovers.

"garden center"

Top 3 at 11 of 49 spots. The Plant Place (3.9★, 63 reviews) wins 14 spots; Badger Boyz (10 reviews) wins 12.

"landscaping"

Top 3 at 11 of 49. Not in the top 20 at 11 spots. Hintz's (49 reviews) wins 10 spots while you have 120.

The fix

Give the garden center and the landscaping company each their own listing

You already do this once

LawnGuard has its own Google listing at the same address (Suite 100), its own name and its own category. It is your best-ranked business outside the orchard. Google allows a department to have its own listing when it serves customers as its own business with its own category.

What we would do

  • Keep one listing as Schmalz Custom Landscaping, first category Landscaper
  • Add Schmalz Garden Center, first category Garden center, pointing to schmalzgardencenter.com
  • Give each its own phone line and its own hours
  • Split the categories so each one is about one thing

One decision for you

The 120 reviews stay with the listing that keeps them. We will read them with you and keep them where most of them belong. Expect a few weeks of movement while Google sorts out the new listing; that is why we want to do it this winter, not in April.

Custom Landscaping, Appleton

Your biggest dollars, and the weakest showing

"landscaping" around W2484 County Hwy KK

Who takes the top 3: Hintz's Lawn & Landscaping (wins 10 spots), Lowney's, Van Zeeland Nursery, Joe's Landscaping, KB Lawn & Landscape.

Listing set to Garden centerNo Google postsWebsite takes 17 to 24 seconds on a phoneNo contact form on the websiteNo business details for Google or AI on the siteNo page description in search resultsOn 1 of 12 main directories6 rivals buy the ad spot on the map

What we fix: its own landscaping listing, a new fast website with a page for each service (design, patios, retaining walls, plantings) and each town you serve, a quote form, weekly posts showing finished projects, and the main directories filled in.

Garden Center, Appleton

A Shopify store with no Google listing of its own

"garden center": average spot 7, top 3 at 11 of 49

Who takes the top 3: The Plant Place (14 spots), Badger Boyz Greenhouses (12), Watter Farms (12), Greenhandle and The Garden. Ace Hardware stores and De Pere Greenhouse buy the ad spot.

schmalzgardencenter.com is a real store, but Google has no listing that points to it. Searches for "nursery near me" and "mulch near me" (about 330 a month in the Appleton area) go to listings built around one thing.

What we fix: its own Garden center listing with spring hours, product photos, weekly posts for what is in stock, and a refreshed store site with plant and mulch pages people find.

Garden center searches by month, Appleton area

October 2025 to September 2026. May is 12 times January. The listing has to be in place before April.

Schmalz Waterford

A good website with an empty Google listing

"landscaping" around Waterford: top 3 at 4 of 49

Who takes the top 3: North Lake Landscaping (12 spots, 23 reviews), Boulder Ridge (10 spots, 179 reviews), Createscape, Happy Grass, Davis Landscape.

0 reviews3 photosNo postsYelp shows a different phone numberPage takes 20 seconds on a phone

The Waterford page itself is strong: it names the area, has an FAQ and introduces Mike Schierl. The listing is what holds it back. North Lake wins with 23 reviews. You have 75 years of customers in the area to ask.

What we fix: a review push from past Waterford customers, real project photos, weekly posts, matching phone numbers everywhere, and Waterford's own pages on the new site.

LawnGuard

Ranking well now, on reviews that stopped coming in August 2025

"lawn care service": top 3 at 20 of 49, best at the center, weak to the north

Who is coming: Schultz Lawn Care has 494 reviews and adds about 7 a month. LawnGuard has 40 and has added none in 14 months. Schultz already wins 10 spots.

5.0★Replies to every review7 photos (Schultz has 116)No postsNo phone number link on the website

What we fix: a review request after every season's service, photos of the crew and results, weekly posts, and a faster site with a page for each treatment. The website says LawnGuard also serves southeastern Wisconsin from Waterford, but Google has no listing for it there. That is a later step.

The Pool Team

Beaten by a company with 5 reviews

"pool builder": average spot 4.6, top 3 at 19 of 49

Who takes the top 3: Cannonball Pools wins 23 spots with 5 reviews, 0.7 miles from you. Then Springhetti, VHC Pools and Fox Valley Pool and Spa.

Address hidden on Google (theirs is shown)No new reviews since JuneReplies to 32% of reviews30 photosNo posts (all three rivals post)No quote form on the website

The website is the best of the five (5 of 6 basics, a page per service). The listing is what lets a 5-review shop beat 69 reviews.

What we fix: show the address, add the right pool categories, photos of every build, reviews after each pool opening, replies to every review, and a quote form. One inground pool is worth more than a year of this whole plan.

Sprangers Orchard

Number 1 for apples. Keep it that way, and take the pumpkin patch.

"apple orchard"

"pumpkin patch"

Peter's Pumpkin Patch is first at 40 spots, and its listing is not even claimed.

2 bad reviews in the last 30 days, both unansweredReplies take about 3 weeksNo posts in the busiest month of the yearAddress not on the websiteWebsite takes 17 seconds on a phone

Orchard and pumpkin searches in the Appleton area hit about 15,400 in October 2025. Posting picking conditions, hours and events every week in September and October, and answering every review within a day, protects the lead you have.

The plan costs $30,000 a year. Even the low case covers it twice.

13x likely case

Revenue, not profit. One extra pool a year pays for the whole plan for two years.

How we got these numbers

Real search counts, published averages, careful assumptions

Searches

Google Ads monthly search counts, October 2025 to September 2026, for Outagamie and Calumet counties (we count 75%, the people inside your map) and one sixth of Racine and Waukesha counties for Waterford. Searches that include a town name are not counted, so the real number is higher.

Clicks

A top 3 listing gets about 7% to 10% of clicks; spots 4 to 10 about 2%; spots 11 to 20 under 1% (BrightLocal and Near Media click studies). We worked it out at each of the 49 spots, from where you rank today.

Customers

10% to 15% of clicks become a call, form or direction request. 20% to 30% of project calls become a job, 35% to 42% for lawn care, about half to 70% for garden center visits.

Dollars

Landscaping: NerdWallet 2026 average about $3,650, LawnLove 2026 about $8,700. Pools: Homegrail about $40,000, 2026 cost guides about $66,000. Lawn care: Angi 2026 about $2,100 a season. Garden centers: Minnesota Grown 2018 survey of 2,505 shoppers, $251 a year at their main garden center ($84.50 a visit, 5 visits).

Estimates, not promises. Nobody can guarantee a ranking on Google. What we can promise is the work, and the same 49-spot map every month so you see what changed.

Recommendation

Do all five together, in this order

1. Split the main listing

Landscaping and the garden center each get their own listing, categories, phone and hours. This is the change with the biggest effect.

2. New websites

Fast on a phone, a quote form on every page, a page for each service and town, and business details Google and AI tools can read. Landscaping (with Waterford) and The Pool Team first, ready before spring.

3. Every Google listing, every week

Weekly posts, photos of real work, replies to every review within a day, review requests after each job, and the main directories filled in with matching details.

4. Measure it

We rerun these 7 searches at the same 49 spots each month and show you the before and after.

The family plan

All five businesses, one plan

One business at a time
